somatic COUNSELLING
Somatic Counselling is a holistic, body-based approach to therapy, and offers a space to be seen, held and supported in any challenges you're experiencing or things you'd like to explore.
We work together to get curious and bring greater awareness to whatever it is you're bringing and how it's showing up in the here-and-now, including on the level of the body. Instead of focusing solely on talking or thinking things through, we listen for and experiment with physical sensations, movement, breath, posture, space and placement of awareness.
The focus is on the process itself, rather than on outcome or an idea that something is broken that needs to be fixed. I believe that all behaviours and body symptoms are wise, including and especially those we find difficult, and if we can start to deeply listen and follow them, they usually show us the path.
This work is client-centred, which means that we always go at your pace (or slower, as needed!) and any support or facilitation I offer is in service to your process, intentions and what you deem useful in any given moment. I am not here as the expert, instead my role is to work with you to create a safe, compassionate container for your exploration, to act as a mirror to deepen your understanding of your self, and to offer invitations for things to try on or practice.
My approach is informed by mindfulness practice, mind-body coaching tools, the latest science on nervous system regulation, and other therapeutic and somatic frameworks. I also make use of more conventional talk-based and cognitive-narrative approaches as needed, and will always meet you where you’re at.
What to expect in a session
We might begin with a grounding exercise to support you to settle into the space and your body.
You can bring a specific intention or challenge, or we can follow what feels alive in the moment.
I will support you to be present, get curious, and explore whatever is arising, which might involve talking about it, bringing attention to the body, or getting up and moving around the space. We may use breath, movement, visualisation, sound and other somatic tools to support this process.
Nearing the end we will take some time to reflect, and discuss a possible practice you might do at home to support integration or further exploration.
